DC for CeCe Update

A few weeks ago, I wrote a post about my friend’s brother (David) doing a 320-mile bike ride with his two sons to raise money for his mom’s (CeCe) lung transplant recovery expenses. Well, I got official news from David today and their trip was a resounding success!

Here is what David had to say:

Hooray! We made it! The D.C. For Cece bike ride fund raiser is a big success. The boys & I had a few rough days & some mechanical trouble along the way, but riding up to the Washington Monument made it worth all the trouble. Every day I was amazed at how strong & determined these young children were. I’m not sure if I’ve instilled a love or a hate of camping in the boys but we will never forget this trip.
Their adventurous exploits even made it into the Pittsburgh Tribune Review:

A.J. and Max Kraning of Verona love their grandmother and riding their bikes.

Combining the two resulted in a fundraising trip from Pittsburgh to Washington, D.C., to help cover medical costs for Cecelia "CeCe" Kraning of Fox Chapel.

A.J., age 5, and Max, age 6, rode with their father, David Kraning, along the Great Allegheny Passage Trail and the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal towpath. They left on the 320-mile trip June 15 from Elizabeth Township.

The project, "D.C. for CeCe," has raised nearly $4,000, David Kraning said, with friends and relatives pledging money for each mile traveled.

"The kids came up with this. I'm just along for the ride," he said. "We go out on that trail all the time, and they've said they wanted to go all the way. This way, they can have fun and help their grandma."

Cecelia Kraning underwent a double lung transplant on Nov. 16, 2005 after being diagnosed with lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and emphysema. She must take anti-rejection medications for the rest of her life. The bill is about $500 a month.

Sounds like some awesome kids who really love their grandma and who also happen to have a really awesome dad!

Here are some photos from their trip and a website if you would like to make a tax-deductible donation on CeCe’s behalf.
