Free Wi-Fi at Barnes and Noble

Somehow I missed the announcements in my blog reader a couple weeks ago that Barnes and Noble is now offering free Wi-Fi at all its retail stores. I discovered this while visiting one of their stores on Friday and am now sitting in the Barnes and Noble at Tysons Corner enjoying the wonders of free Internet. Now if only Borders would follow their lead...

This is smart business. Give away free wifi and you get more people in your store, and those in the store stay longer. Hence, purchases are more likely.

All you lose is the very marginal income from those who would pay for wifi...which is a small and diminishing group.
