The MacBook Air Mini?

Is Apple coming out with a netbook? This picture could just be a clever Photoshop, but it sure looks nice.

Here are the rumored specs:
  • 10.4″ WXGA display.
  • 1280 x 768 pixel with LED backlighting.
  • NVIDIA MCP79
  • Intel Atom Z740 1.83GHz with 1MB L2 cache.
  • 2GB DDR3-800.
  • NVIDIA GeForce 9400M
  • 64GB Solid State Drive.
  • Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR, Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n
  • 1 x USB 2.0
  • 1 x Mini Display Port
  • Battery Li-Ion 5100mA
And an $899 price tag.

Stay tuned.

Apple needs to get in the netbook game, but I don't think 899 is a good price for a netbook.

One of the virtues of a netbook is the low price; I know Apple prices higher but I almost feel as if all netbooks need to be at least under $500 to really compete.

One would also wonder what this would do to the sales of the MacBook Air laptop line. People buy the Air for size, not performance anyway, and while this would be less powerful than the laptop Airs, I don't know that many MacBook Air customers wouldn't sacrifice that in order to save several hundred dollars.

The lower end Air laptop retails for 1799 w/out a solid state hard drive, and the upper end w/ SSD goes for 2499. So how many Air customers wouldn't just opt for this 899 model?

It also seems rather strange that this rumor was started by a Russian site, and that this picture even has the unit with Russian keys. I'm no expert on this, but I don't see why Apple would be testing their prototype in Russia.

At any rate, it's always fun to speculate about Apple, and time will tell on this rumor, as on all others.
