Setting Up Home

Ali and I took a trip to Ikea yesterday to get some ideas for my new place. (Ironically, Ali was the one who did all the shopping.) I'm still getting settled into my new room and want to get a few things to make it a better place for studying, sleeping, and living.

Ali just got a new desk which I saw for the first time yesterday. It has inspired me to consider getting a bigger one as well. I particularly like Ikea's Galant desks and am leaning towards getting one of them. I love the space the L-shape gives for spreading out books, papers and a computer and think it would be a real aid in studying. (One of the benefits of studying in the library is being able to grab a big, uncluttered table where I can spread out with no additional clutter.) I also want to set-up a good filing system. (Organizing papers and paperwork has always been my nemesis and it's time I tackle it head-on.)

My biggest challenge is in figuring out a good layout of my new room. The townhouse I live in has a fireplace downstairs and the chimney comes up through my room with a bump-out in an less than ideal place. I am toying with a few options for both desks and other furniture and playing with potential ideas in Visio. Here's one possible layout I've come up with:

One of my dilemmas is that I'd love to have a large, functional workspace for school (my top priority), but am also in need of a new bed. I found a futon I really like (it's the same as the one I mentioned a few days ago, but with a different base) and am trying to figure out how to fit it all in and best optimize my space.

I was originally hoping to get everything set-up before law school starts this Friday, but need to devote more time studying for my public choice field exam coming up on August 25th. Some of this may have to wait until after that is finished. It may take a few more weeks, but I'm enjoying the process of setting up my new home and getting settled in.

By the way Ali, I do read your blog. Let's see if you read mine.

BTW, I spent much of yesterday assembling my cousin's ikea furniture for her apartment. She bought a desk like Faisal's (but in black) and a number of the book shelves we saw day before.

I'm seeing furniture in my sleep!!!
