This is a collection of short articles designed to provide an introduction to the areas of modern mathematics and pointers to further information, as well as answers to some common (or not!) questions. The material is arranged in a hierarchy of disciplines, each with its own index page ("blue pages"). To reach the best page for your interests, use whichever of these navigation tools ("purple pages") you prefer:
- Choose from a list of subject headings.
- Search for a topic by keywords.
- Click on territory in the "MathMap" above (or in an annotated version).
- Take a tour of the mathematical landscape. (Good for newcomers.)
They break mathematics into the following categories:
Core Branches of Mathematics:
Applied Math and Related Areas:
Here is the economics section. It seems a little sparse, but many of the other sections look much more complete.
Elsewhere is a clever trick for making multiplication easier:
This is actually just a graphical form of traditional multiplication. It's a different approach that might help people who struggle with the conventional way of doing it.
Also, here is a site that lets you plot 2-D and 3-D functions, find intercepts, etc.
It looks like it is still a work in progress, but may have some good potential in the future. Here's one that seems to be even better.
This is another site that lets you modify parameters of a quadratic equation and see how it modifies the plot of the equation:
y = ax^2 + bx + c
It has some neat dynamic feedback that would make it a great tool for building intution for how changes in these parameters affect the plot of the graph.
