Bat Bombs!

I was just watching the History Channel and they had a segment about "Weird Weapons of the Allies" during World War II. One of the weapons they covered were Bat Bombs. These were bombs full of napalm carrying bats. The bomb would drop and a parachute would open at 1,000 feet. The bats would fly off a platform and as they did, a tiny napalm canister attached to each bat would be primed to detonate in 30 minutes. The idea was that the bats would hide in attics and houses before their napalm explosive went off. The plan was to release these over Japanese cities which had many wooden buildings and houses.

The bat bomb was proven to be a successful design. The plan was inexplicably canceled prior to execution. The development of the atomic bomb rendered it unnecessary.

Read more about this here and here.
