What's the main appeal of the show? Is it the beautiful people running around on a tropical island? Profound mysteries that keep getting deeper with enough clues to tease, but not enough to solve? Delving into deep issues such as faith versus reason? A deeply complex plot that is begging for explanation? Action? Romance? Monsters? More? Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, and yes.
Regarding the comlexity of the plotline, Time Magazine had some interesting commentary on on how new technology has made this possible:
This doubly brilliant as it gives the writers far more leeway in writing complex plots than with traditional shows and keeps fans interested in the show, ensuring that anyone who's been watching gets hooked and buys any missed episodes through one medium or another. I initially got drawn in after downloading the first few episodes on iTunes.
The mystery of Lost–and the opportunities for cyberanalysis–turned it into TV for the post-TV generation. Besides stoking interest, technology has affected the kind of storytelling Lost can do. On a practical level, DVRs, DVDs and iTunes downloads mean it’s less likely fans will miss episodes, fall behind and give up, which allows the writers to keep the show complex and challenging. “A show that is as serialized as Lost would have had a much harder time pre-iPod, pre-DVD, pre-streaming video,” says Abrams.
Here's a cool video with glimpses of what's happened so far on the show:
And here's a preview of what's coming:

One of the weird things on the show is all the connections the characters have to one another that they don't yet realize. It has led to much speculation about what other connections they might have, as well as to many theories from fans about why they were all drawn to the island together. Below is a chart showing many of the known connections so far. (It also includes some speculation, such as Jack and Claire being siblings.)

Here is a great summary of all the known characters so far in the show. It's a big list to keep up with!
And then there's the mystery about these numbers:
Something I didn't notice was when Hurley was on his scooter going through the airport, he passed a girls' sports team. Notice the numbers on their backs:

I also thought this tidbit about the numbers as written on Danielle's papers was very, very cool:
Could the numbers be GPS coordinates? Or something else entirely different?
4 8 15 16 23 42
4 8 15 16 23 42
4 8 15 16 23 42
4 8 15 16 23 42
4 8 15 16 23 42
4 8 15 16 23 42
4 8 15 16 23 42
8 is 8th number counting in standard reading format; that is, starting at the top, reading a line left-to-right, then moving to the next line beneath. 15 is 15th, 16 is 16th, 23 is 23rd and 42 is 42nd. If only the 4 was a 1 or 7 this would work with all the numbers.
One fan astutely observed:
Mere coincidence or something more? You'll have to watch the show to find out!
4 + 8 + 15 + 16 + 23 + 42 = 108! Desmond's wife, who is seeking him all these years, is called Penny. Penny is short for Penelope. Penelope was Odysseus wife who had 108 suitors that were trying to marry her.
Here is a collection of theories from fans attempting to explain what's going on in the show:
Tune in next Wednesday to see if any of these is even close to being right!
My personal theory:
I think the show is called LOST because the character connections and plotlines are so complex that if you aren't confused yet, then you haven't been paying attention.
