North Korean Freedom Day

Friday, April 28th is North Korean Freedom Day:

Under Kim Jong-il's regime, well over two million North Korean men, women, and children have died from starvation, while another 400,000 have perished in political prison camps. North Koreans who have fled to China to avoid starvation and persecution, are victimized by traffickers, hunted down by police, and forcibly repatriated because China refuses to allow humanitarian organizations or the United Nations to feed and shelter them. Children whose parents have died or been separated from them wander the streets in search of food and protection.

The North Korea Freedom Coalition, a bipartisan coalition of NGOs and individuals, is organizing a rally on Capitol Hill to stand up for the freedom, human rights and dignity of the North Korean people. Join Members of Congress, North Korean defectors, NGO leaders from the USA, South Korea, and Japan to help support our suffering brothers and sisters. We need you to help make a difference!

Our first North Korea Freedom Day Rally in 2004 drew one thousand participants, including the largest delegation of North Korea defectors ever to have traveled to the United States, and was credited with galvanizing grassroots support for the unanimous passage of the North Korea Human Rights Act later that fall. We expect that as the cause of human rights for North Korea has continued to grow, we will have an even larger turnout for this year’s rally.

The April 28th North Korea Freedom Day rally (noon, U.S. Capitol’s West Front) will be the most important event of a week-long series of activities occurring during North Korea Freedom Week, April 22-30, which will include Congressional hearings, the North Korea Genocide Exhibit, an all night Prayer Vigil at the Embassy of China and other events to focus attention on the horrific suffering in North Korea.

Why get involved?

An estimated 2 million North Koreans have perished under North Korea's brutal dictatorial regime since the mid-1990s. Families continue to starve to death as the North Korean government withholds food rations to entire regions of the nation. The government arbitrarily detains, tortures, and executes its citizens, including children, in a large network of concentration camps. Hundreds of thousands of North Koreans have fled to China to survive, however they live in fear of forced repatriation and imprisonment. Children whose parents have died or been separated from them wander the streets in search of food and protection. We must act now to bring relief!! Read more...
It truly is an incredibly sad situation over there. Does anyone have any thoughts of what can be done to best try to help the North Korean people?
