My parents married in 1955, in their apartment in Chicago, there was an elderly European Jewish couple upstairs from them (I believe both survivors too). They got their first washing machine, at which point a "heated time of martial fellowship" ensued ... over who got to use the washing machine. Was it a machine, thus "man's work" or laundry thus "woman's work," in the end they compromised and would take turns using this invention.
