Gizmodo Has Their Hands on the Next iPhone

iphone4 Oops.  Looks like somebody lost a fourth generation iPhone at a bar in Redwood City.  Gizmodo got their hands on it and has a full-breakdown of what’s new:

  • Front-facing video chat camera
  • Improved regular back-camera (the lens is quite noticeably larger than the iPhone 3GS)
  • Camera flash
  • Micro-SIM instead of standard SIM (like the iPad)
  • Improved display. It's unclear if it's the 960x460 display thrown around before—it certainly looks like it, with the "Connect to iTunes" screen displaying much higher resolution than on a 3GS.
  • What looks to be a secondary mic for noise cancellation, at the top, next to the headphone jack
  • Split buttons for volume
  • Power, mute, and volume buttons are all metallic

Follow the link for many more details, photos, and videos about the new iPhone.

Something tells me Steve Jobs is an unhappy man right now and the guy who lost it is feeling much, much worse…

Interesting story, now revealed on Gizmodo.

The Apple employee apparently is still working for Apple!

Here's the question, though: do some leaks do more good than bad for the company? I know Apple likes secrecy in its new products, but doesn't that just enhance the value of what leaks do transpire?

Is this leak really going to cost Apple anything? The features were already rumored. Even Steve Jobs has said the next gen iPhone will be a huge leap forward.

At most this will just whet the appetite of consumers for the new iPhone. Expect even longer lines on launch day.

As an aside, if I were Steve Jobs, I might even invite this engineer on stage for the official announcement. It would show a good sense of humor and a gesture of good will and forgiveness.

As another random thought, I wonder how much this engineer is paid? That would be a good measure of the risk he took.

Here's yet another random thought: what if this were all planned? Of course Apple wouldn't know exactly what would happen to the iPhone once left in the bar, but they probably knew it would leak out one way or another.

Think of the marvelous publicity this is generating for Apple, not that they need any more. Think of the cool story they just created.
