  8. For students -- how much is too much debt? Your payments shouldn't exceed 10% of your expected monthly gross income once you graduate. If you borrow $23,000, your payments will be $276/month so you'd need to make at least $33,000 coming out. Right now the average debt load is $20,098. Two tips: 1) keep your debt to a minimum; and 2) choose your major wisely.
