The summer solstice happens [today] at 7:59 pm EDT, at which time the Sun is directly over the Tropic of Cancer and pretty close to the International Date Line. This is as far north as the Sun appears to get in our sky, and after today it starts the procession south and the days begin to get shorter for the next six months.
