The Fries That Bind Us

Here's a cool map showing the global reach of McDonald's and Starbucks:

Something to think about from the map (emphasis mine):

A single cup of Starbucks coffee can depend upon as many as 19 different countries. Between the coffee beans, the milk, the sugar, and the paper cup, Starbucks coffee is a global hub that connects some of the poorest countries in the world with some of the wealthiest.
Makes me wonder how much companies like Starbucks do to actually help the world's poor compared to foreign aid programs from other nations? I'm confident that the companies do far, far more.

Of course, this map seems to inspire other thoughts in Tyler Cowen:

I can't stand either chain but I sure want to live near them. I know McDonald's is hopeless, at least since they stopped frying their potatoes in horse fat. But couldn't Starbucks at least sell good mineral water?
See some more great infographics here.

I never understand why either chain does so well.

We have McDonalds in Pakistan, the taste is bland when compared to local cuisine and it costs as much as dining out at a good quality restraunt (Upsize meal, Rs. 300, steak at an upclass eatery Rs. 325).

Yet, they do crazy business.
