New MacBook Pros Released Today

new_mac_books

Apple just released new MacBook Pros today.  As expected, all of them the 15 and 17-inch got a bump-up in processor speed and hard drive space.  The 13-inch only got a minor speed increase.  Battery life has also been significantly increased – 10 hours for the 13-inch and 8 to 9 hours for the 15 and 17 inch.  (It will be interesting to see how this plays out in real-world use.)

Lots of other changes listed after the link.

If Apple offers a student deal with discounts on the MacBook Pro and iPad combination this summer, this is very, very tempting… purely for purposed of working on my dissertation, of course.

I'm now drooling at the prospect of a 15" MBP with a faster processor, double the memory, and double the hard drive of my current MBP. But spec'd out the way I'd like it, the price is $2830, which is staggering...

Really riding on their market power to leave the 13 without Core i5. Dells have that at half the price. Should really have gotten my sister a laptop back in February.

In other Apple news, I discovered that Marrium's 3GS did not have the latest update (which makes the iPhone unlockable) so I managed to jailbreak it. It's a pretty easy process, although I'm not sure how well iTunes will work with it now.

Anyway, hope you're well. Job interview tomorrow...

Ali, Apple probably made the right call by not increasing the processor speed by much in order to extend the battery life by a lot. I know that's the trade-off I would prefer. Add on to that a small speed bump-up and -- something I didn't realize until today -- the lower end model now comes with 4 GB of RAM instead of 2 GB, which is huge.

Apple has essentially lowered the price of their higher-end MacBook Pro by $300 and given the option for a faster processor (2.66 GHz vs. 2.4 GHz) and a larger hard drive (320 GB vs. 250 GB). With the ability to custom-order a larger hard drive, I can't imagine why most people would need to buy the higher-end 13-inch. You can get almost as much machine for $300 less. A much better value than last year's models.

Any computer will be better value than last year's model. That isn't really a comparison worth making. However, the premium being charged for a Macbook at this price point seems to be really large.

Thoughts on the iPad when I reply to your mail. It was wonderful to see. Thanks for keeping in touch!
